Awareness - Swine Flu

"Swine flu" refers to influenza in pigs. Occasionally, pigs transmit influenza viruses to people, mainly to hog farmers and veterinarians. Less often, someone infected passes the infection to others.
Causes of swine flu:

Swine flu is caused by influenza which is an acute viral infection that affects mainly nose, throat, bronchi and occasionally lungs. There are three types of influenza viruses: Type A, B and C.
Type - A influenza virus are further classified in to sub types one
such sub type of influenza A, virus (H1N1) was commonly referred to as “Swine Flu”
Symptoms of swine flu:
Most of the symptoms are same as seasonal virus. They can include;

Ø Sore throat and head aches

Ø Cough
Ø Stomach pains vomiting
Ø Fever

How does it spread?
Ø  The influenza A (H1N1) virus appears to be as contagious as seasonal influenza, and is spreading fast particularly among young people in the age group of 10 to 45 and among pregnant ladies.
It is transmitted from person to person when one inhales or comes in contact with droplets or small particles that are expelled when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

DO’S:

Ø  Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Use disposable masks in airports, crowded markets
Ø  Wash your hands often with soap water, especially after you cough or sneeze
Ø  Use hand cleaners/hand wash while washing your hands (e.g. Germ Free)
Ø  Try to avoid close contact with sick people
Ø  If you are sick, please stay at home and limit contact with others as much as possible
Ø  Always maintain high levels of personal hygiene, especially before and after food preparation and in & out of toilets
Ø  While  in  an  affected region,  seek  immediate  medical  attention  if  you  develop  influenza-like symptoms. (High Fever, body pain, coughing and red nose)
Ø  Get plenty of sleep
Ø  Rest and take plenty of liquids

DONT’S:

Ø  Touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way
Ø  Visit live animal markets, poultry and pig farms in affected countries

Ø  Neglect yourself and seek medical advice if needed

Pr
eventive measures of Swine flu:

Ø  stay home when you are sick
Ø  If suffering from flu like symptoms (fever, running nose, cold, sore throat, nausea / vomiting) please isolate yourself to prevent transmission of infection to others as the disease spreads by droplet infection while coughing and sneezing.
Ø  Report to doctor either family physician or preferably in a govt. hospitals   as they are better equipped and take necessary treatment
Ø  Undergo nasal / throat swab test on the advice of the govt. doctors as required at recognized centres
Ø  Do not self-medicate, it could be dangerous
Ø  Avoid going to crowded places like markets, malls, and air ports, railway stations if possible. Keep safe distance from suspected people.
Ø  Be careful with elderly people, children , pregnant women and people suffering from TB, HIV, diabetic, chronic lung / heart and neurological diseases and Cancer as they are more susceptible
Ø  Develop healthy habits like nutritious diet, safe drinking water , enough rest, sleep and breathing exercises
Ø  Don't share items such as cigarettes, glasses or cups, lipstick, toys or anything which could be contaminated with respiratory secretions
Ø  Adding few drops of “Eucalyptus oil (commonly known as Nilgiri oil)” in Luke warm water or on your hand kerchief and inhaling can boosts immune system against H1N1 virus (Ref. Recommended by National Institute of Virology)
Prevention is better than cure
