Environment - Water pollution

Environment - Water pollution

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.

Source of water pollution in construction industry:

Ø Batching plant, Wet Mix Macadam Plant Etc.,
Ø Curing / Casting Yard
Ø Sewage
Ø Canteen
Ø Vehicles wash area / Work shop activities
Ø Storm water discharge
Methods of waste water treatment:
The following methods of treatment are adapted to clean the waste water from domestic waste and industrial waste
Ø Screening
Ø Grit removal
Ø Primary clarification
Ø Biological treatment if BOD, COD present
Ø Final clarification
Ø Disinfection

Management of waste water from curing / casting yard:

Ø Optimize the water requirement for curing
Ø Utilizing wet blanks / Hessian (jute) cloth to maintain moisture
Ø Curing water runoff shall be away from water bodies
Ø Curing yard overflow water shall be collected in a tank through lined open or closed drains
Ø Reuse the collected curing water. Fresh water shall be added only for loss
Ø At every 3 days interval, the complete collected curing water shall be used for sprinkling purpose / dust suppression

Collecting & Treatment of Batching plant waste water:

Ø Waste water from the batching plant mixer shall be collected to the treatment plant by the transit mixer or through the drainage system
Ø The collected waste water shall be treated by dosing method using alum solution in the following steps;
Ø Take 20 litres of fresh water and add 1 kg powder of alum with proper mixing for 5 minutes. This solution shall be added on trial basis to bring down the pH to within the range of
6.5 to 8.5
Ø Before doing the dosing, the initial pH of the waste water in the settling chamber needs to be checked. This pH level varies with the amount of water used for washing the drum and characteristics of the mixture
Ø The dosing can be standardized only after periodic observations for the pH of the waste water
Ø The same collected wash water from the batching plant shall be used to wash and clean the transit mixer drums. Under any circumstances, fresh water shall not be used

Management of waste water from vehicle wash area & workshop activities:

Ø Install an oil separator in vehicle wash area
Ø The cleaning and degreasing of vehicles and components must be carried out in designated wash bay
Ø Waste water recycling system shall be installed
Ø The sludge / waste settled in the oil separator and the associated treatment system shall be re-used / disposed to authorized parties
Ø All the spillage or leakages from the plants, machineries and vehicles shall be cleaned with the absorbent in localized area
Water is precious gift from nature let us preserve it
